This Saturday, March 14th, is no ordinary Pi Day.
It is The Big One. The Ultimate. The one mathematicians the world over have been waiting for because it only happens ONCE in a lifetime! (Unless, as my ten-year-old daughter points out, you live past 100.)
MATH CLASS WAS A WHILE AGO. REMIND ME WHAT PI IS.
Pi is the ratio used to compute the circumference, area, and volume of circles. It is written as the Greek symbol π and 3.141592653 represents the first ten digits.
WHY IS PI SUCH A BIG DEAL
Pi is an irrational number which means it continues on and on and on without repeating and without any pattern. Mathematicians have calculated it out to eight quadrillion places to the right of the decimal. Whew!
YOU SAID THIS YEAR WAS AN EPIC PI DAY. WHAT GIVES.
On 3/14/15 at 9:26:53 a.m. and p.m, the digits in the date and time represent the first 10 digits of Pi. Pretty cool, eh? This phenomenon occurs every 100 years.
ARE YOU MAKING THIS DAY UP
Nope! National Pi Day became a holiday in the United States in 2009 to “encourage schools and educators to observe the day with appropriate activities that teach students about Pi and engage them about the study of mathematics.” I’m all for any day that gets our kids more excited about math.
DOES ANYONE IN THE REAL WORLD USE PI
Any smartphone, computer, TV, or radio user (okay, everyone) has benefited from a signal that has likely been optimized using Pi. Engineers use it to calculate anything curved (roads, automobile panels, soda cans—the list goes on and on!) and astronomers use it to calculate planetary distances. In ancient times, Egyptians even used it to build pyramids.
I’M READY TO CELEBRATE! ANY GIFT OR PARTY SUGGESTIONS?
I thought you’d never ask! As Pi Day is one of our lesser known holidays, anything you do is likely to be a wonderful surprise. Have some fun and embrace the theme of the occasion with these Pi(e)-themed gift and party ideas:
- A pie! Ice cream and whipped cream too.
- A Pi(e) themed movie-there are a range of options from the cerebral to the raunchy
- Send a note to your favorite math teacher and tell her what a difference she made in your life
- If your sweetie is mathematically inclined, let them know that on this Epic Pi Day, you love them “to infinity and beyond.” Be sure to get their heart racing by using the mathematical symbols.
- For the foodie/chef in your life, a special pie server could make their day.
SAVE ME SOME TIME PLEASE!
While there is no consensus list of favorite pies, the five below appear most often. You also might be surprised to find out that there are many Pi(e)-themed movie choices!
ANY LAST WORDS
Odds are you will enjoy only one Epic Pi Day in your life. Party like a rockstar and let your inner mathematician go wild!
