I don’t think of Halloween as a “gifting” holiday. Maybe if you go to a party, a hostess gift…but otherwise, it’s about costumed kids racing around to as many houses as they possibly can, to get as much candy as they can. After which, they unceremoniously dump their loot on the floor and feverishly count and sort it all. That part usually takes mere minutes…it’s the trading with their siblings that can take hours.
Last year, my family was lucky enough to get not one, not two, but three Halloween gifts! It’s hard to explain, but the sight of an unexpected package on the front door step is super exciting. After sighing with relief because it’s not from Amazon Prime (which just means a book or vitamins), they literally squealed with delight as they opened up packages from my mom, my sister and my Cousin Suzanne. While they enjoyed the thoughtful items inside, the idea that someone they love was thinking of them and sent a gift their way seemed to be the bigger thrill.
As to the contents of those boxes, they were an assortment of Halloween goodies and candies. The kids had a blast going through everything. As we live across the country from our extended family, it’s thoughtful gestures like these that help connect my children with their relatives. There were even a few things inside for me, including this exceptionally stylish Halloween purse, complete with a brass knuckle handle!
Sending a gift “just because” is a wonderful way to make someone’s day. Yes, mailing a package can be a pain…but when it shows up on the doorstep of someone you love, it’s a really awesome treat!
Check out the brass knuckle handles. Warning: this little beauty can only hold 10 mini candy bars! 😉
